FORUM 11: 1619

This week we will examine the trailer and pilot episode of 1619, a podcast created by Nikole Hannah-Jones for *New York Times Magazine to observe the 400th anniversary of American slavery. Its spinoff, The 1619 Project, "aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative."

For the first part of the Discussion Forum, analyze the audio aesthetics of the podcast. As you will hear, the series trailer is comprised primarily of the first few minutes of the pilot episode. Listen to both and answer the questions:

How are the trailer and the beginning of the pilot similar?
How are they different (specifically, what is the time code of the pilot when the script diverges from the trailer)?
Describe the audio aesthetics (sound quality, musical arrangement, pacing, vocal delivery, etc.) of the trailer and the pilot episode
How would you describe the "tone" or the "feel" of the show based on its audio aesthetics?
Do you think the audio aesthetic of the show helps support its message and its stated aims?

Next, do some research about the podcast. It has generated substantial controversy since its release, with even sitting Senators and an ex-President weighing in. Because of that, many news articles have been written about it. Find a news article about the podcast and paste the link into you forum response. You may want to spend a few minutes searching before you decide, as there are a lot of different takes on this issue and ideally you will not all choose the same 2 or 3 articles that pop up first on the search page. Describe the contents of the article you find in one (1) paragraph.

To receive full credit you should make a meaningful comment on at least two (2) of your classmates' posts. A meaningful comment is defined as 2-3 sentences that demonstrate clearly you have 1) read their original post in its entirety, and 2) you are responding to their thoughts and ideas in a clear and respectful way.

TRAILER FEEDBACK

Feedback assignments offer opportunities to give constructive feedback to your peers.

Learning to give and receive feedback and constructive criticism is a vital skill in today’s world. To practice that skill, and to improve the overall quality of our work, this assignment requires you to provide substantive feedback on five (5) of your classmates’ submissions.

You will need to post substantive feedback on five (5) your classmates' submissions by the deadline to receive full credit for this assignment. Substantive feedback is defined by crafting a post that is: 1) two (2) to three (3) sentences in length, 2) identifies at least one (1) thing about the submission that you thought was done well, and 3) identifies at least one (1) thing about the submission that could be improved. This assignment will be submitted in Desire2Learn (D2L) in a format similar to the weekly Discussion Forums. If a submission already has five (5) feedback responses please choose a different submission to comment on.
